Spot's coverage is not based on pre-existing conditions

Unlike most pet insurance plans, Spot's coverage does not exclude pre-existing conditions. Some health conditions are not covered by the policy. For instance, dental disease, hip dysplasia, intervertebral disk disease, and other hereditary conditions aren't covered. The insurance does not cover dental or orthodontic procedures, nor expenses associated with boarding and daycare. Cosmetic procedures and bilateral conditions are not covered by the insurance.

One downside to Spot's pre-existing condition policy is that it will not cover veterinary treatment for arthritis. The insurance company defines a "pre-existing" condition as any medical condition that existed before Spot's plan was issued. Unless the arthritis is already treated, the insurance company won't pay for it. The policy does not have a maximum age, but customers will need to pay a minimum $2,500 deductible in order to cover vet bills.
